What is a Catalyst?

Catalyst is a substance that is capable of accelerating or retarding a chemical reaction, without breaking down or combined to produce a transformation that modifies the molecules, changing and releasing all the energy contained therein.

The catalysts also do not alter the energy balance of the final catalytic chemical reaction, but only allowed to reach equilibrium with varying speed. Exist in the natural world on a daily basis, ie biological catalysts or biocatalysts. Of these the most important biocatalysts are enzymes.
